Directed By Desmond Davis: Written By Edna O’Brien
91 mins, UK, 1964, Digital, F-Rated
Kate Brady (Rita Tushingham), a girl from County Clare, and her exuberant flatmate Baba (Lynn Redgrave) explore the temptations of 1960’s Dublin city life. The two shop assistants share a room. Kate is a quiet, rather naive girl, Baba is vivacious and ebullient with an eye for the boys. But when the two befriend a quiet, middle-aged writer ( PeterFinch), he makes a beeline for the shy, lonely Kate and they embark on a doomed love affair.
Director Desmond Davis’s picture makes great use of Dublin locations – Bewley’s Cafe, Greene’s Bookshop, the Four Provinces Ballroom and the Great South Wall. Tushingham’s candid and evocative performance established her as one of British cinema’s favourite actresses. Edna O’Brien skilfully adapts her own best-selling novel ‘The Lonely Girl’ intothe screenplay for this film ‘Girl with Green Eyes’.
The screening will be followed by a discussion about the film, led by the ICC’s Film Club Curator and Film Reviewer Steve Martin.
